A Great Day Out In The Scenic Rim

Recently my family and some close friends spent the day at Mountview Alpaca Farm – An amazing experience where you can not only feed the alpacas but you can also walk them around the farm.

The farm is located within the grounds of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards about 6 minuets drive from Canungra Town Centre, officially in the Scenic Rim Shire of Queensland – However is also very close and neighbouring the Gold Coast Hinterland.

The grounds of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards are stunning – Lush and green with an amazing view of the mountains and the Canungra creek running along side. It’s the perfect setting to purchase a bottle of wine and a picnic hamper from the vineyard caffe and hit the relax button.

Now this is a “Photography Blog” so lets get into it – Armed with my Lumix G9 and 2 lenses the Lumix 35 to 100mm f/2.8 and my Leica 12mm f1.2 – I was set out to capture some great images of our day.

We got to the grounds around 11am and it was a HOT and Bright spring day in Queensland, so it made for a very challenging photographic experience, however I love the challenge of shooting right in the middle of the day and working to my environment.

I always try to protect my highlights and not blow out the sky or other bright element! So under exposing was the name of the game and I do also try and get thing correct in camera as much as I possibly can – However I knew in such bright conditions shooting in RAW and post production work was certainly on the cards. I also forgot my ND filter… … … GREAT… … …

Wrapping things up – The day at Mountview Alpaca Farm Canungra was a fantastic time for the family and a great photographic opportunity. The food the setting and most importantly the Alpacas all made for a super fun experience we will all remember.

Lumix G7 – Engagement Session?

Lumix G7 – Engagement Session?

Can you shoot an engagement session with a Lumix G7 and its Zoom Kit Lens? Well? The answer is yes! And I did last week – Jan 2021.

I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and see if I could get usable results with my Lumix G7 from 2015 and its 45 to 105mm f/4 to 5.6 kit lens. Usually I do the bulk of my engagement shoots either on my Lumix G9 or GX8 with fast Olympus glass – However on this shoot I really wanted to put my skills to the test (and on the line) and see what I could come up with.

We all decided to meet up in New Farm Park in Brisbane for this engagement shoot, the couple were super fun from the get go and we developed a very quick working relationship. They were no wiser that I was running my own little “camera gear test” and things progressed nicely and we got some great shots.

The one great – GREAT – thing about mirrorless systems is that you get the preview in camera and get to dial in your exposure in real time (is that cheating?) So even though I was using my old G7 from 2015 the technology was still there to help. Using the zoom lens was a bit different as I’m used to faster prime lenses so I was further back than I’d usually like to be, however using the compression and really focusing on my foregrounds and backgrounds let me dial in some creamy backgrounds. Being a 45 to 150mm zoom I found myself moving around and the focal length(s) made me work hard on my compositions and pushed out a few more creative shots and angles.

Shooting early to mid morning ment I had no low light issues and I could really keep my ISO down and focus on getting clean shots. The overall size of the G7 is super small and lightweight and I really enjoyed the mobility it gave me and I can definitely see myself using it more and more for this type of photo shoot.

Overall I was very impressed with the end results and I’m happy to say my clients were too! Yes the lens was a bit on the slow side however I made it work. Yes it’s only a 16 megapixel sensor – however the way Panasonic renders and compress colours will always be a selling point for me.

One point  I’d like to make it is not really about the camera or the age of the technology – It’s about knowing your camera inside out and knowing how to use it like its second nature or an extension of yourself. I’m a big believer in picking a system and staying with it. I made the switch over to Lumix about 5 years ago from Nikon and I just dove in deep and spent hours learning the Lumix system now I can pick up any Lumix camera and get great results.

5 Reasons I got a Lumix G9 moving into 2021

The Lumix G9 come out late 2017 and was the flagship photo centric camera in the Panasonic Lumix line-up before they released the full frame range in late 2018 early 2019.

Now moving forward into 2021, the question is? Is the G9 still worth picking up for keen amateurs & semi professional photographers like myself. Here are my top 5 reasons I picked one up!

1: PRICE – In Australia you can pick one up on sale new for as little as $1500 & on the second hand market as low as $890 & that is a lot of camera for the price.

2: Micro 4/3rds Mount – Being a micro four thirds Mount/Sensor the Lumix G9 has a HUGE range of of lenses that are small & compact & come in many different focal lengths – Not only from Panasonic but ALL Olympus lenses fit the mount too, making the lens choice very diverse and as I’m heavily invested in micro 4/3rds it made sense for me.

3: The Sensor – The G9 Has a effective 20.3 megapixel CMOS sensor that produces amazing JPEGS in camera & also shoots detailed RAW images onto a TWIN SD card slot. With the ability to shoot 80 megapixel images the options are endless for great looking photos.

4: Image Stabilisation – The G9 has incredible stabilisation built into the camera – 5-axis Sensor-shift Image Stabilisation to be precise & paired up with a Lumix Lens with its own stabilisation gives you amazing hand-held options for shooting stills in low light.

5: Display – The G9 has a super clear EVF with a resolution of 3.68 million dots giving you ta great reference of your exposure in camera as you shoot & with the fully articulating flip screen composing shots from all angle is a breeze.

Now thats only my “Top” 5 reasons for purchasing Lumix G9 in 2020/21, there are WAY more cool things like how the camera is fully customisable with programable function buttons, the 20fps burst mode, the great auto focus & how WELL the G9 is built in its quality! I could go on & on…

As I generally stick to Branding, Family and Lifestyle photography booking weddings and wedding photography is not really my main focus – However in saying that I LOVE to shoot weddings as a Second Shooter and assisting.

Working for seasoned wedding photographers is always such a great experience and the skills I have developed shooting weddings has been incredible and invaluable – It’s also good fun and a great little sideline business aside from my own professional projects.

Having a different approach and mind-set to many photographers getting into second shooting, I’m not looking to become a full-time wedding photographer or build up my portfolio – Its all about the role of the second shooter and the business of supporting the lead photographer helping them get the best results and performance on the day.

Comparing myself to other creatives/photographers and I really got to watch myself that I don’t go down too deep into their creative rabbit hole.

I’ll get totally into their “Thing” Style, Look, Persona and even Gear. And it’s ok for a while but I find it can really affect my work and creative output! Instead of getting out and creating my own stuff I’ll get myself wrapped up in their work.

I’ll think “Well Such and Such is doing X, Y and Z so I better do that too” Instead of just getting out with my camera and creating and developing my own photography. 

It might happen every couple of months that I get like that, but I’m aware of my thought process when it starts to happen and I’m quick to snap out of it. 

I think it’s great to have influences and get inspired from other creatives – but when you start comparing yourself to others that can be super draining on your creative output and the development of your own style.

Especially now and in these times it’s more important than ever to have your own style and groove – Have influences but don’t be influenced.

How I Personally Improved My Photography With Micro Four Thirds

  • It’s bad in low light…
  • The sensor is too small…
  • There is no dynamic range…
  • You can’t get a blurry background…

The Limitations Of Micro Four Thirds.

However it’s those so-called limitations that opened up my skills as a photographer, the lessons I’ve learnt and the stretching of my creativity has been amazing since I converted over to the system nearly 3 years ago.

In 2017 I was – Let’s just say a semi professional using a full frame professional DSLR and everything was ok, I thought I knew it all about photography. 

I wanted to try a mirrorless camera, in particular the micro four thirds system as the small size appealed to me. Olympus and especially Lumix were really kicking goals with the micro four thirds range, so I began my research in mid 2017 – Pretty much the same time the GH5 was getting released.

I knew I wanted to go “All In” so I sold my DSLR and purchased a new Lumix G7 with two kit lenses and put the rest of the profits from my DSLR aside to fund any future pro level lenses. 

I remember getting it home and taking it out of the box and thinking this is a Toy!!! However as soon as I loaded up the battery and took a few shots around the house I knew I made the right decision and the photography lessons were about to start.

All Shot On Micro Four Thirds

At this stage I was still a guitar teacher and not really shooting professionally, only doing semi-professional gigs on the side, and even though I have always loved and pursued photography I was still very much getting used to the idea of becoming a professional photographer and still had many lessons to learn.

Up to that point I used Aperture Priority mode maybe 80% of the time and Manual mode the rest of the time. Like many photographers aspiring to become a professional I knew I needed to start shooting in manual mode to take full advantage of my camera – But how easy is it just to put it on Aperture Priority and shoot and spray, especially on a full frame!!! 

Aperture and Auto ISO = Instant Awesomeness.

This is when I really had to change my attitude and take the deep dive into manual mode as the limitations of the small sensor on my G7 were starting to show very quickly and leaving two of the three exposure settings (Shutter and ISO) on auto to do their “thing” was not going to be a option.

Just a gentle reminder too I was using the kit lenses at this stage with apertures of f/4 to f/5.6 – So yes pretty slow, prior to that I was using a fast prime of f/1.4 on a full frame camera so the learning curve was massive and I had NO idea how much I relied on a full frame with fast prime to get my so called awesome shots.

Using my little G7 more and more on personal projects, with the family and on the streets – forcing myself to shoot 100% of the time in manual mode I started to feel a shift in my photography and the way I took photos. I really had to think about how I was going to take certain shots as the limitations of the tiny little sensor and slow lenses made me work for my shots.

You had to chase the light and work the shadows, find ways to steady your hands and really take into consideration your shutter speed and your ISO working in conjunction with your selected aperture. This was really the first time I started to grasp the “Exposure Triangle” and started to get some clarity, making me explore other functions like metering and setting my white balance – Things I would always leave the camera to decide.

The G7 is not a stabilised camera and the lenses were also not stabilised so handshake and capturing images crisp and clear was a challenge especially when the light wasn’t great. This then made me rethink ISO because as we all know on full frame systems we can keep the ISO relatively low and it works well in low light.

However not so much on the G7, the micro four thirds sensor made me experiment with ISO more and made me realise you don’t have to keep low, if you want to get sharp shots you might just have to boost that ISO to speed up that shutter.

After about a year of continuous practice and only shooting on manual mode I honestly felt more like a “Real” photographer. The little G7 and its limitations forced me to rethink my skill-set and made me really work for my craft. My photos were now starting to take their own charter and I felt like my own style was starting to form.

At this stage I started to look into other cameras in the Lumix lineup as I felt like a little bit of stabilisation could come in handy. Also If I wanted to start picking up more professional work I would need a 2nd camera. 

After doing more research I decided to look into a Lumix GX8 and with a quick browse on eBay I found one locally for $400 and I jumped on it. Win-Win… I still had about $1000 left over from my full frame sale so I invested in a stabilised lens, the Lumix 35 to 100mm f/2.8

Now loaded up with what Lumix calls its Duel-IS – I could really expand out and I found my photography reached yet another milestone. I could now do handheld shots in all kinds of situations, the Duel-IS giving more stops to play with and options to work in low light and the GX8 soon became my primary camera.

Now in 2021 and with a few extra bits of kit in my photography bag – Most notably a Lumix G9 and a variety of pro level Olympus and Lumix glass. My little G7 still sits amongst it all and I continually use it to this day. If it was not for its so called limitations and its tiny little micro four thirds sensor I don’t think I’d be here today working as a professional photographer and writing this article.

When I sold my full frame camera many people would consider that a downgrade, but for me it was an upgrade – an upgrade on SO many levels! It made me research and educate myself on the technical side of photography because up to this point I was heavily relying on the creative side and letting the camera do the work.

I guess you could say it’s kinda like a musician who can’t read music – sure you can create music (and GREAT music EG: The Beatles) but it’s something that plays on your mind and once you get your reading down an entire new world opens up.

That was me – I really wanted to become a professional photographer but still was unsure of my technical skills and the language – However by changing my gear to a totally different system that made me work a bit harder was a game changer.

ISO Hack For Your Lumix G9

How you can easily control your ISO on your Panasonic Lumix G9

We all know that ISO is a BIG thing, It’s one of the three core functions of the exposure triangle. Along with Aperture and Shutter it dictates the outcome of our images.

The Lumix G9 like many cameras has a dedicated ISO function button on the top of the camera – You push it down and you can control your ISO via any of the dials on the camera.

However, what if we didn’t have to push a seperate button on the camera and we could control our ISO the same way we control our Aperture or Shutter via the front and back dials? (In The Moment)

We’re very lucky as G9 users that we have the added scroll wheel on the back of the camera around the Menu/Set button, mostly used to scroll the menu or browse through our shots.

However the other lucky thing about being a G9 user is the customisation – The way you can set the camera’s many dials and buttons to suit your own style is fantastic, and this is where the “Hack” comes into it.

I don’t know about you but I like to be in the moment when I’m shooting, pushing a separate button to control my ISO and taking away the normal functions of the dials really slows me down! Even if it’s a split second, that could be the make or break of a great image.


How about if we had full control of the exposure triangle under our finger and thumb – Dialling in the correct settings at a moment’s notice? I’m going to show you.

Did you know you can customise the scroll wheel on the back of the G9? Lets now set it to control our ISO, giving us a dedicated ISO control to use in the moment.

  1. Go into the menu and select the “C and Wrench” tab
  2. Go Into “Dial Operations” 
  3. Go into “Dial Set”
  4. Scroll down to “Control Dial Assignment”
  5. Select “ISO” – AND YOUR DONE

On my G9 I’ve got it setup like this:

  • Front Dial – Aperture 
  • Back Dial – Shutter (The Workhorse)
  • Back Scroll Wheel – ISO

I’ve also set up other custom buttons to control my metering modes and we’ve still got the 3 separate White Balance, ISO, and Exposure Compensation buttons on top of the camera to use. However, having a dedicated dial to control your ISO is an amazing function, the ability to have the 3 elements working in real time will shape your photography and the way you take photos as they happen.

Is GH5 Still Worth Purchasing in 2021?

Yes – Here’s Why!!!

Top 5

Number One: The Price – The price of the GH5 is amazing both new or used, bang for your buck the features you get for just over $1000 is amazing. A pro level camera for both video and photo with dual card slots and a choice of lens that is pretty much endless – You’ll be hard pressed to find a better value camera on the market today.

Number Two: The colour profiles that come in the camera – From Cinelike D and Cinelike V, with the option to add V-Log. The colour profiles are amazing and allows filmmakers to grade GH5 footage to look highly professional and cinematic.

Number Three: The ability to shoot 4K at 60 frames per second, while many cameras still don’t offer this feature the GH5 was doing it back in 2017.

Number Four: The rotating swivel screen – This is another great feature that Panasonic uses on most of their micro four third cameras. The ability to shoot from many different angles, getting up high or getting down low – The swivel screen is another feature that will open up your videography and photography.

Number Five: In Body Stabilization – Having in body stabilization (IBS) on the GH5 allows filmmakers to not have to be reliant on gimbals, enabling the ability to shoot in many situations with less gear. And for photographers like myself syncing up the In Body Stabilisation with a Stabilized lens allows for more options in low light settings.

Now that is just 5 reasons why the GH5 is still a major player in today’s camera market – We also did not mention things like its small size and great build quality and the ability to fully customise its dials and buttons to your own shooting style, for a truly personal experience. 

I’d be lost without my GH5 – It would be hard for me to change up systems now as the camera has become an extension of my personal photography style. What do you think? Is the GH5 still worth it in 2021?

How to get killer jpegs in-camera with your Panasonic Lumix  

Want Jpegs that look awesome?

Want to do less editing and more sharing?

Want great colours in-camera?

I think Panasonic is generally underrated as a photography system, most people think GH5 and Video when it comes to the brand. However if you spend some time deeper in the settings and customise a few things – they become a photo centric system that can keep up with any brand out there.

I’m focusing on Panasonic Micro Four Thirds range in this blog – such as the Lumix G7, GH5 and G9 as they are the cameras I use in my professional work. 

Now as a professional photographer and designer I shoot RAW for all of my professional work, as we know RAW files are king in Photoshop and Lightroom. However how about just day to day shooting and capturing the family outing or BBQ?

  • Do we need the big RAW files? 
  • How do we get great in-camera results? 
  • Can we capture awesome colours as we shoot?
  • How can we share and upload our photos almost instantly?

Well the key is optimise your camera and set it up for capturing killer jpegs!


Step 1: I might be stating the obvious here? But it’s knowing how to use your camera and being able to work that all important exposure triangle! 


Being able to shoot in Manual and dile in your exposure is one of the most important things if you’re going to capture killer Jpegs. Because remember that mindset “I’ll just photoshop it later” is out the window, we’re aiming to get it right in-camera. If you’re not comfortable in shooting manual either Aperture priority Or Shutter priority is fine too – but as long as you have most of the setting under your control and not just leaving it up to the camera to decide.

Step 2: COMPOSITION – Again we’re not going to be relying on photoshop or lightroom for any cropping or adjustments, so understanding some basic composition rules is going to aid your killer jpegs. Understanding the rule of 3rds and how to place subjects in your frame, using background and foreground elements and knowing the distance between your subjects are all things to consider.

Step 3: Lens choice – Choosing the correct lens and knowing how to use its focal length and aperture is going to help get it right in camera tremendously. If you know you’re going to be using your leica 42.5mm f1.2 on your GH5 – You know you’re going to be getting amazing boke and buttery blurred out backgrounds and you can really use the f1.2 to your advantage. If you’re using a telephoto lens then you can use its compression to really draw out your subject and make things larger than life.

Step 4: Now we get into setting up your Panasonic Lumix to take killer Jpegs (Finally) So with this step we have to dive a bit deeper into our camera setting AND I must point out this section can be pretty subjective and will take a little bit of experimenting to find what your personal taste is and how your want your jpegs to stand out. 

First of all you want to set your camera to shoot both fine JPEG and RAW files – Just in case you actually want to do some deeper editing in Lightroom. 

Then depending on what you’re going to be shooting? Decide on what aspect ratio is going to work best for your needs? For example most of the time people are going to be shooting on 4:3 as it fills up most of the frame and is a common ratio. However you might be thinking posting straight to Instagram so a 1:1 ratio is going to be perfect and you can work your compositing around it. But then you might also be thinking more cinematic – so working with the 16:9 ratio is going to give that kind of vibe. No matter what ratio you go with and like I say to my students you don’t have to stick to one, feel free to experiment.

So now’s the part you have to play around and actually get out there and take some photos to work out your killer JPEG settings. First of all go into your lumix camera menu and go to Photo Style and scroll over until you find your preferred photo profile – For me I like shooting in Cinelike V or I also use one of the Blank Custom Profiles to tweak my colours and setting to get my JPEGS looking the way I like. 


This is my personal preference and a starting point for anyone keen to have a go.

Camera – Lumix G9 

Lens – Olympus 12 – 40mm f/2.8

Photo Style/Profile – Cinelike V




SATURATION +5 (This one I change up a lot depending on situation, light and tone)

Ratio – Varying depending on situation.

As I have mentioned before this is all personal taste and driven by the results you want from your JPEGS – For myself, I like lots of punch and depth that’s why I have my Saturation up so high and my Contrast boosted. It’s just what I like…

Many of my students don’t even know their camera can do things like this and there surprised they can get such good colours and JPEGS in-Camera and even skip the editing process completely!

Finally the other GREAT thing shooting JPEG is the smaller files, you can get them off your camera and onto you phone quickly and easily using the Panasonic Image App – One of the best transfer apps I’ve ever used, just sync up your camera over wifi and you can quickly get your images onto your phone. Any Lumix users out there that don’t use this App I highly recommend you look into it, it’s not only a transfer system but you can control and use your camera remotely from your device.

NOW – To all my professional photographer readers out there. How good would it be if you could deliver JPEGS straight to your client? How much time would that save? If you spent a good amount of time practicing dialing in your settings and getting your JPEG game down it could be a game changer for your business and workflow.

Now I’m aware this would not be suited for every photo shoot or situation, however a family portrait session or engagement session could certainly work Or perhaps event photography? The time saving benefits could be massive, not to mention the skills you would develop! But hey, this topic could be another blog.

How is your JPEG game? Does anyone else have any JPEG tips? I really hope this helps my fellow Lumix photographers out there and gives you some ideas and options to play around with.

New Old Camera

Your camera is 3 years old? How do you call yourself a photographer!!!

Ok let’s face it ANY camera from ANY brand from the last 5 years is going to be able to do pretty much anything you want.

2020 was a huge year for cameras with all the big brands pumping out their latest and greatest cameras. Now in 2021 Sony has already hit the ground running  releasing the A1- a camera that is just loaded with modern technology and features, most of them I would never use.

  • This One can Do This – However It Overheats!

You all know the YouTube videos out there – Gear Gear Gear…

I’m usually 3 or 4 years behind the tech world (As I’m composing this on my 10 year old MacBook) But I do keep my eye on the new releases and gear updates and I LOVE gear, don’t get me wrong! However the last 8 months have just been TOO much for me and now with the A1 –  I just can’t keep up anymore.

I shoot on a 5 year old Lumix GX8 and a 3 year old Lumix G9 and they suit my style down to the ground – I would like to experiment with a full frame again and I’m thinking it will be a canon 6d mkii (Another 4 year old camera) 

To be completely honest, all this new gear makes me want to get my Nikon D700 back in action and go against all the new camera hype and total bombardment from all the camera companies, advertising and YouTube endorsements.

I mean I’m pretty sure I could still shoot a pretty cool session with a D700 no problems at all.
